Lance Dunbar enlisted in the US Army in November 1998. He completed infantry basic training at Ft. Benning, GA in April 1999. After completing basic training PVT Dunbar went on to complete Airborne School and was assigned to C Company, 3/325th AIR, 82nd Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg, NC, where he served as an Assistant Gunner, Javelin Gunner, and Team Leader. In 2000, PV2 Dunbar was assigned to the “Land Warrior” platoon, where he was an experimental computerized soldier. At the end of 2000, SPC Dunbar was reassigned to C Company, 1/503rd PIR, 2nd ID, Camp Casey, South Korea where he was promoted to Sergeant. In July 2002, SGT Dunbar reenlisted in the New York Army National Guard where he was assigned to 427th Brigade Support Battalion, Rochester, NY for 2 years until Honorably Discharged.
As a member of the Land Warrior program PFC Dunbar tested hi-tech combat equipment including a thermal weapon system, global positioning system, night vision goggles, image & video capturing device attached to the weapon, load-bearing vest, and insect repellant uniforms. In September 2000, PFC Dunbar took part in an Urban Terrain live fire exercise at FT Polk, LA where he also completed the Land Warrior training course. After taking part in the Land Warrior program PFC Dunbar was a representative at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Conference in 2000 where he demonstrated aspects of the Land Warrior system.
During one of the most pivotal times in US history, on September 11, 2001, SGT Dunbar was on a real world mission in South Korea. Immediately after completing the mission his role transitioned into providing base security until November 2001. In November SGT Dunbar and his platoon relocated to Seoul where they secured a landing zone for Former President George H.W. Bush.
SGT Dunbar’s military schooling includes Airborne School and EMT training. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, and Army Service Ribbon. He is also authorized to wear the Expert Infantryman’s Badge and Parachutist Badge.
SGT Dunbar spent 2 of his 5 years of military service on parachute status and has participated in 13 static line parachute jumps.
